This Widow Twankey pantomime dame costume was created for the final major project of my BA (Hons) Costume degree. Inspired by childhood memories of pantomimes and whimsical costumes worn by dames, this was designed by Wayne Martin specifically for the laundry scene in the pantomime Aladdin. This was a personal project, which not only covered making the costume but sourcing all materials and accessories and managing a budget.
This unit, making a pantomime dame costume, has provided an opportunity to refine and advance key skills, including draping on the mannequin, garment construction, experimenting with decorative techniques and conducting professional fittings in anticipation of a career in the industry. In addition, a significant aspect of this project was learning how to adapt a female garment to fit a male performer correctly.
This complete dame costume comprises a padded bra, dress, apron, petticoat, hoop skirt, and bloomers with sourced Dr Martens, headpiece and bracelet. The fabrics were carefully selected based on research into traditional pantomime dame costumes, focusing on the bold colours and pattern fabrics which are most commonly used. The blue fabric used for the dress represents bubbles, and the miniature washing adds extra detail. The apron mimics a washing machine.
