Crystalline Whispers

Crystalline Whispers explores the intricate and detailed nature of geodes and gemstones alike. I found inspiration from the textures, patterns and layers created within these delicate rock formations.

I began by producing some of my own drawings to develop into samples, using mediums like watercolour and alcohol inks, along with materials like salt and clingfilm in order to create unique mark-making and textures that relate to my theme. These drawings were then developed into initial samples such as digital designs or CAD drawings in which I then experimented adding beading, embellishments, embroidery and even fabric manipulation. With this experimentation, I was able to determine which processes and techniques as well as designs I’d like to take into my final sampling stage, in which I just created my planned-out designs into actual samples.

For this project, I looked to build up layers within my work to reflect the layers built up in their rock formations. I did this by layering up my design and techniques, whether it be layering multiple fabrics, or layering a digital design with beading on top. I enjoyed this style as it added depth to my work. I also looked to using contrasting materials, such as hard and soft materials to create some of my samples; this was due to my fascination with the contrast of geodes' hard exterior against their softer and delicate interior. Overall, I feel my project reflects the nature of these precious stones and I’m happy with how it came out.

Plans after degree

My plans are to hopefully get a job within the textiles industry, specifically one that specialises in embroidery and stitch.
