Through the three years of studying the BA (Hons) Costume course at AUB, I have learnt not only sewing and tailoring techniques but also improved interpersonal skills to help me step up to the starting line of the professional level.
In the final year, I tackled two different projects. In the first unit, I collaborated with the Salisbury Museum to reproduce the 1820s child 'Spencer' jacket with precise details. I also made the 1820s child dress with underwear for the AUB costume store. I developed my knowledge of historical and theatrical costumes for children and my time management skills working under tight deadlines.
For my major project, I focused on expanding my knowledge and skills in ladies’ tailoring and hat-making by making Lilli Ann's 1950s tailored suit for my personal project. To create the 1950s feminine but gamine figure, I researched and learnt soft tailoring skills from the beginning, including proper ironing methods and choosing fabrics, especially interfacings. It was challenging but also rewarding work for me.
Plans after degree
I’m planning to work as a dresser in a theatre in Poole, and I will focus on gaining experience working as a costumier to expand my future choices, not only in the UK, but also Japan or other countries to work in the film and TV industry.
