This project investigates how digital fashion and technology can be used to explore fluidity and transformation in gender identity within Japanese folklore, while preserving and reinterpreting Japanese cultural heritage.
The research outcomes are portrayed through a unisex digital fashion collection, featuring six outfits inspired by various yōkai, folktales and elements of visual-kei, a Japanese movement and fashion style characterised by shock and androgyny. The aim of this project is to raise awareness of Japanese culture while reinterpreting it for contemporary audiences, including those who are both familiar and unfamiliar with it.
The collection is presented in a story-driven digital showroom and accompanied by embroidered keychains embedded with NFC chips, which, when scanned, lead to a webpage encapsulating all of my research as well as information on the yōkai and Japanese folktales.
