My work specialises in bringing a designer's vision to life, using a variety of techniques to create the perfect costume that enhances the character's portrayal and helps the audience understand the character's personality.
This year, I did a personal project where I chose and researched a design I was interested in making. My chosen design was a 1880s-inspired romantic style tutu and bodice, originally designed by American designer Robert Perdziola. Through this project I got to explore the techniques, history and making of ballet costumes, which further cemented my interest and passion for ballet design.
I continued this topic into my final project where I chose another ballet costume, this time designed by English designer William John Charles Pitcher. Throughout both projects, I worked closely with my tutors and used my referencing material to ensure techniques were consistent and of a good quality. I used this project to explore techniques for decoration and to develop my finishing skills to create a quality costume worthy of stage.
Although I did not collaborate on either project, I made sure to consult with both my peers and teachers for an outside perspective, as this is essential to the construction and development of a garment.
Plans after degree
After graduation I plan to work in the costume industry, specialising in ballet costume.
I am very eager to enter the industry and learn from my experiences, working to see what challenges I come across throughout my career. I am very excited to see where my career will take me, whether in the UK or abroad.
