Floral Masculinity
Floral Masculinity explores the relationship between masculinity, femininity and personal heritage through the reimagination of workwear. Inspired by my grandad who worked as a fireman, the project developed from an image of him in his fireman's uniform, covered in a blue floral bedsheet.
Originally developed as a womenswear collection, the project has evolved into menswear throughout the design process as I became more interested in challenging the expectations surrounding masculinity within fashion. By combining utilitarian silhouettes with bright florals and sequins, I want to question why softness and colour are more often than not associated with femininity. This collection reimagines functional garments in a more expressive way and creating menswear that feels both protective and vulnerable.
Through exaggerated silhouettes, reflective details and floral fabrics, the collection balances practicality with self-expression. It celebrates individuality whilst also exploring ideas of heritage, memory and identity, using clothing as a way to interpret traditional masculine uniforms into something more open, expressive and contemporary.
