Orikata Botanica
A Spring/Summer ready-to-wear textile collection that merges the precision of origami with the rich symbolism of Japanese florals.
Inspired by the disciplined art of paper folding and the cultural depth of botanical motifs in Japanese tradition, the project explores how textiles can express both heritage and innovation. Drawing influence from the structural work of Issey Miyake and the textural experimentation of Mikka Barr, I set out to reinterpret traditional aesthetics through contemporary textile design. Research trips to the Victoria and Albert Museum, Saatchi Gallery and Russell-Cotes Museum in Bournemouth helped shape my creative direction, while traditional Wagara patterns provided both visual structure and conceptual depth.
The collection combines digital print, laser cutting, hand manipulation, and CAD embroidery to create intricate, tactile surfaces. These techniques reflect my focus on layering and transformation, key elements of Japanese craftsmanship and the natural world. By mixing structured forms with organic movement, I aimed to create textiles that feel alive and dimensional.
Orikata Botanica reimagines traditional craft through a modern lens, pushing the boundaries of surface design. It is a collection rooted in cultural memory, but forward-looking in form, process and purpose.
Following university, I plan to pursue roles in fashion print and fabric manipulation within the London design industry, while also exploring opportunities in textiles education and teaching.
