My greatest passion is storytelling, specifically storytelling through costume rooted in a historical context.
During my MA, I set out to redesign the character of Figaro from Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro for the Costume Society's Patterns of Performance Design Competition. The beauty I found in Mozart’s attempt at Le Nozze di Figaro was his aim to unmask society during a time when society was on the brink of the French Revolution.
My design work began with period-accurate patterns which I changed slightly to fit my design for Figaro. My research into 18th-century class division took me to a detailed look at the lavish embellishments of the French style and how this compared to what the lower class was wearing. After research of a few close-up images of the elaborate trims and buttons present in menswear, I produced the idea to create my buttons for the frock coat and waistcoat using the 18th-century method of creating spangles. I have also been at work screen printing with foil to recreate fabric from an 18th-century archive, as well as using a 3D pen to mimic the look of 17th-century bobbin lace.
In July, I was awarded Highly Commended for my reimagined version of Figaro.
Plans after degree
To find work in making for performance design within Theatre or Opera, and to make name for myself as a costume designer in film and tv.
