BA (Hons) Costume

Lucy Dean

My time on the BA (Hons) Costume course at AUB has allowed me to expand and develop my skills in pattern cutting and making across a variety of time periods. The course has aided my entry into the costume industry, building my confidence it my skills and within myself, as well as developing useful connections with my peers and external relationships.

During my final year at AUB, I created a costume for the Dame character in Oxford Playhouse's pantomime, Dick Whittington. I also created a 1930s bias cut dress, complete with the hand beading of sea creatures and bubbles for the production of La Traviata by Hurn Court Opera. Both of these opportunities were incredible – I got to experience the world of theatre whilst making external connections and challenging my making skills with two completely differing makes and periods. As well as making for Dick Whittington, I completed a weeks work placement at the theatre, experiencing the world of dressing and show prep.

In addition to the external shows, I also created costumes for Grimm Tales, an AUB Production, one of which being the character of the Narrator. This was a valuable experience, as I collaborated with the designers and actors in fittings.

In the last term at AUB, I completed two weeks of work experience with Disney, which was extended into a trainee job that has been great experience for my future.

Plans after degree

Once I graduate, I plan to make my way into the film and television industries, hopefully working in a workroom environment.
