Based on Madeline Miller’s story retelling, my Major Project centres around the mythological character of Circe: a minor goddess and witch born from Helios (the sun God) and Perse (the Oceanid nymph). Once portrayed as a secondary figure in ‘The Odyssey’, Circe is powerfully re-imagined by Miller as a complex, autonomous woman. My aim was to translate this mythological essence through the themes of feminism, nature, culture and heritage.
Designing for a costume context, fashion designers such as Christian Dior were a valuable point of reference. For further design inspiration, I drew from Robert Kushner – an American artist whose dynamic use of texture resonates with my own layered, organic aesthetic. Using digital print techniques to create textured backgrounds, these were enhanced with CAD embroidery to add depth and visual intrigue. Handcrafted crochet elements were also incorporated throughout, brining a personal, tactile quality to the collection.
