During my time at Arts University Bournemouth on the BA (Hons) Costume course, I have markedly improved my pattern drafting, making and writing skills. I have found a new love for essay writing and it has become one of my greatest strengths. Access to our on-site archive has sparked a strong passion for extant garments and fuelled the plan for a future career in the museum and heritage sector.

In the first unit of my third year, I undertook a personal project making a Victorian day dress inspired by a garment held at the London Museum. I also made the crinoline underneath to support the weight of the skirts. I adored making this piece and it influenced my choice for my final project. Whilst constructing the skirt, I learnt to cartridge pleat, a skill I have since tried to include in each garment I have made as I found the process almost meditative.

For my Final Major Project, I was lucky enough to land a volunteer placement at a small museum in my hometown. Working with them for half the unit and writing essays based on articles in their undocumented collection has taught me so much about the museum industry. It has solidified my decision to pursue this career path. 

The other half of my project was creating four corsets from different eras – 1598, 1785–88, 1875 and 1905 – for the AUB Costume Store. I really enjoy making structural undergarments and have refined my skills massively over my years at university.

After my degree, I will continue volunteering at my local museum, preparing the collection for future digitisation, while setting up my own business making and selling historical replicas and inspired underpinnings.
