During my time on BA (Hons) Costume, I have specialised in costume construction, learning methods for both modern and historical costume and for both men’s tailoring and womenswear.
For my Final Major Project, I undertook a personal project to create an 18th century, convertible polonaise gown. Inspired by Hulu’s TV show The Great, I reinterpreted a 19th century illustration with the main body of the dress consisting of a bold patterned, floral fabric from Liberty. During this project, I was able to expand upon my sewing skills and problem solve to create the ambitious structure of the polonaise. I feel as though this piece really expresses my identity as a costume creator, with its extravagant structure and bold colours.
Additionally, I worked as a costume maker on the AUB Dance production Diva, where I grew my passion for men’s tailoring as well as continuing to advance my skill set in womenswear. I had the chance to collaborate with the costume designer, supervisors and even the dancers, where I had to cater for their movements. I found working on a live production to be exciting and was pleased to see the garments come to life on stage.
Plans after degree
I have plans to undertake an internship at La Musica Lyrica this summer with my ultimate goal to work in the film industry as a costume designer. I am excited to explore my passion moving into the industry.
