BA (Hons) Costume

Katie Underhay

Within the Final Major Project unit of my degree, I set out to construct a replica of an original 1824 Regency dress, complete with period accurate undergarments of a corset, chemise and petticoat. This is the costume that I had chosen to feature at Summer Shows 2025 in the AUB Studio Theatre. The original dress had been stored at Blandford Museum for many years and explores a traditional empire silhouette in a light pink satin fabric, appropriate for day or evening wear.

For the process of this costume, I engaged in many construction skills and techniques, proposing from pattern sourcing of timeless books from authors such as Jean Hunnisett, Janet Arnold and Mandy Barrington. Each component of the costume was either flat drafted or cut on the stand, following precise measurements of my model. With fabrics sourced from Gold Hawk Road in London by my costume supervisor, I considerately and sustainably cut my patterns to sew.

Throughout the construction process I conducted many fittings alongside my tutor and used significant problem-solving processes to achieve the final bespoke fitting outcome of my regency dress, of which I am extremely proud of the skills and techniques I learnt along the way.

Plans after degree

To work in the costume department of the Disney Cruise Line, as this will enable me to work in a costume role as well as travel to places I have never before been.
