Julien Lip Syn Chen

Born and bred in Cheras, Julien is a filmmaker who has experience in local documentaries and commercial producing. With his interest in archiving things for the future and using archival footage to create new things, he blends fictional and non-fictional storytelling, along with his interest in youth, to mimic what it is like to remember things.

During MA Film Practice (Online), he explored the use of archival imagery and casual conversation to create a documentary that showcases the fragmentary nature of memory and collective experiences as part of his thesis film.

Besides creating short films and writing, he currently works as a Program Officer with the Culture Affairs Department at the Japan Foundation, Kuala Lumpur where he organises screenings, film festivals and collaborates with local artists.

We Remember What We Remember

After over a decade since graduating secondary school, the filmmaker gathers old friends to "remember" the collective memory of their school life, "revealing" different perspectives of incidents and "resolve" the lingering trauma of adolescence. Using a blend of casual conversations, archival footage and an exercise where he made his ex-schoolmates attempt to remember, Julien created this work to reveal different perspectives of their school lives.
