Concretised Communities
Moving towards a more economically, environmentally, and socially sustainable future for society, Concretised Communities reimagines urban living in response to changing times and the need to combat isolation.
By addressing the stigma associated with brutalist estates, this initiative aims to reverse the urban decay and negative perceptions that have led to the deterioration and loss of large-scale functional buildings. This project explores participatory design through the transformation of Wyndham Court in Southampton. Aligned with Southampton's vision for the future, this initiative blends the community's heritage and values with residents' expectations. By revitalising community cohesion and fostering trustworthy connections, it aspires to create a safer, more inclusive environment where all individuals, regardless of their background, can thrive as the world evolves.
Concretised Communities aims to create a modern communal environment by integrating sustainable living with participatory and user-centred design, inspired by Soviet micro-districts – participation, connections, and communality. The scheme includes redesigned green public spaces such as courtyards and gardens, communal areas, and mosaic-maker spaces that strengthen connections with Southampton’s artistic heritage and diverse demographic. The design merges Southampton’s historical and cultural elements with contemporary functionalities, emphasising human-computer interactions to highlight local artists' potential and enhance community connections.
