Jonathan King

I am a still life photographer specialising in advertising and commercial images. I want to create eye-catching and thought-provoking photographs within my practice, which engage with the audience and inspire them to look further into the meaning and messages within my work.

My inspiration comes from both traditional still life painters such as Paul Cezanne and Clara Peters, and from contemporary photographers such as Ori Gersht, John Blakemore and David Sykes. I incorporate many of my hobbies and interests such as video and tabletop games. Concepts within my work are using items to create stories allowing them to come to life and feel relatable to the viewers.

Key themes cover political, environmental, historical and personal issues guiding my subject matter, which has included commercial products, family heirlooms, ocean waste, dead fish and flowers. I like using graphical backgrounds (painting, drawing or using A.I.) to enhance the images and give them tactility. I focus on using a variety of mixed media and photoshop to create high quality images, incorporating bold and vibrant colours.

I prefer to take and edit my work in layers to create highly composited and natural looking images. In addition, my knowledge of editing and A.I. allows me to generate striking images by incorporating unique and creative elements. When viewing my work, the relevancy of the audience depends on the subject matter I have shot.

I tend to aim for a diverse range of spectators, wanting them to think about the significance of the meaning within each of my photographs.

My Dearest Jean – Photo book

My late maternal grandfather died when I was ten, leaving behind unusual and unique mementos from his travels across the world during his time in the Royal Navy. This photobook contains letters and diary entries from my grandparents during their engagement and early married life. Unfortunately, my maternal grandmother passed before I was born so I never met her. Through this project, I have also been able to find out more about her life and her family's fascinating stories as well.

Through the use of photography and A.I. I have recreated these 'stories' about my grandparents. This has given me a unique insight into my grandparents' lives and how they came to acquire a multitude of fascinating mementos which have now become family heirlooms.
