I am a Colombian illustrator and ecologist. My work often explores the ways in which art can be useful for scientific education and communication by clarifying ideas, appealing to emotions, and allowing for inventiveness and eccentricism. My style has been described as detailed, elaborate, realistic and possessing an air of mystery.

Portraits of Us is a collection of 13 mirrors that present the viewer with their own reflection, superimposed with a delicate depiction of an animal that is often disliked, feared or unwanted. Mirrors are set up so each piece feels like a magical and special encounter. By forcing that connection and framing it as something beautiful, thoughts about coexistence and preconceived prejudices are prompted. 

Each illustration was first developed digitally before being hand engraved into mirrors using a rotary tool. These thrifted mirrors retain their imperfections as visible traces of previous use. A key influence for the project comes from decorative folk art traditions; the use of ornamentation, effort and care that can elevate ordinary household objects into treasured ones. Through intricate embellishment, the mirrors attempt to extend this same sense of value and devotion toward their subjects. 

The work asks why an animal considered undesirable might still deserve such deliberate attention and whether that instinct resistance can shift through sustained consideration. Rather than offering admonishment or instruction, the collection is intended as a gift, as an invitation to re-frame encounters with overlooked animals as moments of curiosity, to learn to see how much there is to see, and be all the better for it.

I will work in scientific illustration commission work creating accurate and specific pieces for clients, while also allowing myself more freedom and creativity in my personal work which I will turn into prints and other products.
