This project reimagines the character of Queen Lear, drawing inspiration from Shakespeare's King Lear. The costumes explore Lear's journey through three distinct stages: power, vulnerability, and madness. The first layer, a golden robe, symbolises royal authority, blending Eastern and Western influences with a regal silhouette. The second layer, a white and gold jacket, reflects Lear's diminishing power and the burden of her past responsibilities.
Its cocoon-like shape and falling leaf patterns symbolise her ageing and the erosion of her status. The final layer, a distressed white dress, represents Lear's complete descent into madness, exposed to the harsh elements. Each piece is meticulously crafted to capture the complex emotions and transformations of Queen Lear, combining historical references with a modern, conceptual approach.
The designs use luxurious yet fragile materials to underscore the tension between power and vulnerability, making this costume series a visual narrative of Lear's tragic decline.
Plans after degree
After graduation, I plan to focus moving to London due to its job opportunities in costume design. I’m open to internships in theatre or film, particularly in costume making, to gain experience.
In the medium term, I aim to build a strong portfolio through open calls, collaborations, and media exposure, while determining if the UK is the right place for me long-term.
Ultimately, I aspire to establish a stable career in the UK’s costume design industry, enjoying a balanced life and a supportive community.
