Fortified Florals
My project, Fortified Florals, acts as a response to the social and political threats to women's rights that have continued to increase throughout the years.
I reworked florals – traditionally very feminine motifs – into a collection of samples for fashion that act as armour and protection, whilst continuing to embrace femininity rather that hiding from it. I explored this narrative through colour, motif development and materials. My project features moody, inky florals and muted, muddy tones on a range of fabrics. I included flowy chiffon and silky satin as and embrace and nod to femininity. As well as this, I "infected" typically male textiles, such as denim, leather and camo print with my florals, reclaiming these as our own, like what men in power are attempting to do with our rights.
Plans after degree
I intend to continue my design career, finding a role in commercial fashion, as I am inspired by the ideas of friends, family and strangers falling in love and connecting with my designs. I intend to do this working within a textile studio or in-house with a fashion brand.
