Biophilia focuses on the innate connection between humans and nature and the positive impact this relationship can have on wellbeing.

I chose to base the project around houseplants because they reinforce this idea in a very direct and familiar way, as we actively bring small pieces of nature into our homes to live alongside. My intention was for this collection to do the same job by embodying the uplifting and energising ambience of nature in a space. To communicate this, I focused heavily on the intricate textures, shapes and patterns found within the imagery I worked from, particularly various calatheas, begonias and orchids. I was especially drawn to the story told by these plants as they grow, trailing upwards or outwards, which became a key influence throughout the project. 

Through observational drawing and mark-making, I explored ways of capturing growth and liveliness in a tactile and immersive way. Alongside hand-generated processes, digital experimentation played an important role in the development of the work. Trialling different compositions and colour ways allowed me to explore how scale, placement and colour could affect the mood and energy of a space. I wanted the designs to feel bright and energising while still having a sense of softness to account for the more calming aspects of natural environments.

Using a combination of digital print, screen printing and laser processes, I produced a series of outcomes designed specifically for residential interiors. Combining these techniques to layer texture, detail and pattern allowed me to emulate the vitality of nature while also creating contemporary and tactile surfaces. Ultimately, my project aims to emphasise and embrace the emotional connection between us and the natural world, promoting an atmosphere of wellbeing and vitality within everyday living spaces.

Ideally, I would like to start working in industry right away, specialising in digital or screen-printed design for interiors, or even just surface pattern design in general, as I could see myself thriving in these settings with the experience I've gained from my degree.
