Since childhood I have been fascinated with the ancient peoples of the world and the marks that they left on the landscape, visible or not, my enthusiasm enlivened by historical fiction and artwork reconstructions.
Today I explore ancient landscapes and ancestral traces, aiming to discern the ambience created by their past. I employ visual metaphors to tell stories suggested across the centuries, hinting at truths no longer visible on the ground, utilising modern infrastructure allegorically, relating the journeys of ideas, cultures, and technologies.
I employ a 30-year-old medium format 6x6 camera system and black and white film, digitising and processing the results in a similar fashion to a darkroom worker (as I have been in the past), emphasising mood and a “soot and whitewash” aesthetic. I feel more at-one with analogue cameras, enjoying their clicks, whirrs and clunks, admiring their full metal solidity. I feel more mindful, present and connected with my subject when making photographs on film, while recognising the benefits of digital technology for the dissemination of my work in the digital age.
Through my work I hope to encourage the contemplation of deeper time and invite audiences to learn from our history.
Plans after degree
I am presently planning an exhibition for late 2025. I aim to exhibit my work more widely and explore book publishing.
