Amelie Marking

My final collection is based around the concept of childhood summer holiday memories. I have used my own case study of myself as a child going with my family to visit my grandad, who lives in the mountains in rural central Portugal. I was particularly interested in childhood clothing and prints from these times that often had very few bright bold prints, and how this compares to clothing as an adult.

My aim was to create a womenswear summer collection that changes this and uses these bright bold prints, as well as reflecting the different memories from my childhood summer holidays. These memories include laying in rustic, stripy hammocks and doing watercolour paintings, as well as swimming in river beaches. I chose to reflect these memories in my collection through experimenting with creative pattern cutting through the idea of a hammock, by draping hammocks and experimenting with gathering and drape. I also decided to create my bright, bold prints by using a watercolour painting I painted whilst in Portugal and created swimwear that reflects my memories of swimming whilst there. Overall, I wanted my collection to feel rustic and nostalgic but with modern silhouettes and prints.

Plans after degree

I plan to gain experience within the fashion industry, particularly in womenswear, print design or textile development roles. My long-term goal is to build a career that combines my interests in print, colour  and creative pattern cutting with one aspiration being a fashion print designer. I also hope to expand my knowledge of industry through experience in a range of areas in fashion.
