As we go into the final semester of this academic year, I caught up with my good friend Lorna Doyle. She’s a second year BA (Hons) Fine Art student particularly interested in sculpture work and immersive art forms.

What have you noticed about the transition from first to second year?

It’s been a positive one. I feel more stable with my friends and it’s a cosier environment sharing a house this year, which is really nice and a different atmosphere to first year halls. I definitely feel I have a better routine in second year too and I’ve enjoyed being able to explore more of Bournemouth.

On my Fine Art course, I’ve enjoyed the freedom and space in the studios as well as a change of tutor which gives a fresh perspective to my work! I feel I’ve been able to grow more in having confidence in my ability, through the opportunity and encouragement to explore my own, individual creative path.

What’s something you’re enjoying the most this academic year?

Homing in on a way of working that’s authentic to me.

I’m more able to trust my intuition and do what aligns with my art practice, which is taking the form of sculpture and performance right now. I really enjoyed bringing my art together and showcasing it in the MAP space amongst the fine art studios for a day last term. This immersive experience that I could set up was exciting – a new opportunity for me to try something different and practise exhibiting my work.

What’s one goal you have for the second half of this academic year?

Redefining my technical skills in using video and photography equipment. I would also like to continue trying to collaborate with other artists, to learn from their style and practice and try new approaches myself. This will also help my networking skills at AUB.

What’s a piece of advice you would like other/prospective students to know?

Invest your time and energy into ideas that fulfil you and do the same with your friends. Invest your energy into people that invest energy into you.

Something to think about
