AUB's campus was filled with festive tunes and supplied with mulled wine and mince pies from the Arts Bar, as it held its first Community Winter Market.
Featured alongside wonderful student creations were AUB Alumni and a dozen local artists – Lauren Marina, Vicreates, Franka, The Beauty Umbrella and Jungle Towers to name a few – all selling their work during the event on Thursday 23 November.
There was great feedback from these local artists, including Cara of Jungle Towers, who says, “Thank you so much for inviting me down to the Winter Market! I had such a nice time, and the students are absolute gems!”
Carrie Packer, Accommodation and Advice Manager at AUB, and shares her thoughts:
"Through the market, students are able to demonstrate their own amazing talents alongside successful local artists and alumni. It was fantastic to see such great engagement and we look forward to holding this as a regular event."
The Community Winter Market featured Hazaar, winners of the PIEoneer 2023 Sustainability International Impact Award. Hazaar is a sustainable marketplace that helps to build circular economies on university campuses, giving students the chance to sell and up-cycle preloved fashion. Over 18% of AUB students are already taking apart, with the first market alone generating over £700 of profit.
Student stallholder for Hazaar, Lily from BA (Hons) Illustration, says, "It’s been good fun, and I can’t wait to do it again!".
Ed Sharp, AUBSU Events Assistant, also thinks it's a brilliant idea:
"Hazaar has provided the opportunity to create a circular clothing market for the students at AUB. Hand-to-hand delivery helps the environment and saves money on postage for the students. We’re excited to see the Hazaar community grow at AUB."
AUB will be hosting more Community Markets very soon. These events are a great opportunity to support students and local artists while getting into the Christmas spirit.
