This lecture is part of the AUB Open Lecture Series
The AUB Open lectures are a series of events sharing specialist knowledge on topics of design thinking and creative practice. The lectures support the university's commitment to its civic agenda.
The second in the series, led by Dr Emma Shercliff, explores the phenomena of participatory making: making together with other people.
About this event
‘Making together’ is a commonplace activity that might include shared opportunities to learn new skills, collectively conceive and produce artworks, or community initiatives to demonstrate solidarity and political engagement. However, all thrive off an extraordinary collision between the private internal worlds accessed through the sense of touch and stimulated by handling materials and the public external worlds created through social interaction. Drawing on recent research and her experience of participatory textile making, Emma presents case studies of ‘making together’ that highlight the emotional intelligence of making, the ingenuity of collaboration and the complex and layered modes of communication at play.
Dr Emma Shercliff is Senior Lecturer, Textiles and Master of Research (MRes Arts) at AUB. Emma has over 20 years’ experience organising creative ideation workshops and running participatory arts projects. Her research explores the impact and value of collaborative making and drawing workshops as tools for doing research, working towards an integration of theory and practice in maker cultures.
