Spring Awakening, completed in 1891, is a highly controversial and groundbreaking play that tells the story of schoolchildren in fin-de-siècle provincial Germany, whose discovery of their budding sexual feelings within a society that tries to silence and control them, ultimately leads to tragedy.
A play about change, the misuse of authority and the inability to find a voice, Wedekind’s work explores several topics that prevented it from being performed and led to its censorship for decades, such as homosexuality, domestic and sexual violence, and suicide.
Spring Awakening depicts two clashing worlds of a confining, repressive society and one of adolescent anarchy, sexual curiosity, confusion, and pain.
