TheGallery

TheGallery showcases work by contemporary artists and designers from around the world, including collections on loan from major galleries and museums. TheGallery is a major resource for contemporary art and design in the South of England. Many of the exhibitions and artists’ commissions that have been produced within the space since its opening in 1998 have received both national and international recognition.

We are a public gallery that delivers an exciting portfolio of exhibitions, events, international exhibitions and commissioned projects, building upon the creative collaboration between the Arts University Bournemouth and external venues. TheGallery seeks to enhance the cultural capital of the students, staff and alumni whilst also providing a public platform for the arts within the sub-region. Our exhibitions have toured nationally and internationally, expanding AUB’s ever-growing creative collaborations with external organisations.

text+work is the concept which underpins our exhibition programme and creative events and commissioned projects within the University. It promotes a forum for challenging dialogue between innovative contemporary art, design and media practice and their theoretical context. text+work furthers the scholarship and research agenda of the university and shares research activity through exhibitions and published texts. It is a valuable resource for the University and is integrated into its teaching, learning and research.

TheGallery is comprised of six exhibition spaces:

On Campus
Main Gallery, North Building
Northwest Gallery, North Building
M Studio: Makers Space, A Block
Library Gallery, AUB Library
Live Project Space, North Building

Off Site

In addition to our permanent spaces, we host a number of one-off projects and events, collaborating with different creative organisations like Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Pavilion Dance, The Jerwood Charitable Foundation and Bournemouth Arts by the Sea Festival.

Our creative projects have included hosting national competitions, exhibitions and events inside CRAB Drawing Studio, and other collaborations with students, staff, alumni and outside partners.

Off-site, TheGallery bring arts to the local area by working in partnership with WestBeach as an additional platform to showcase exhibitions.

TheGallery received special recognition in the Sir Misha Black Awards 2016, which was awarded to Arts University Bournemouth for Innovation in Design Education.

TheGallery is open to the public and admission to its exhibitions and many of the supporting events is free.
