English For Academic Purposes

Whether you are new to higher education or are a confident, experienced student – developing your academic skills and language can help you feel more confident about your studies and achieve the results you want. Some of the essential skills related to academic study we can help with are:

  • Understanding your assignment briefs
  • Managing your time
  • Planning and structuring your essays
  • Using clear and appropriate grammar and vocabulary
  • Following academic conventions, such as referencing and style
  • Communicating with an audience of tutors and/or peers
  • Following and taking notes in lectures

Term-time teaching:

  • ‘Language For…’ classes. Open to all students who want to practise their language and skills for academic and social stations at university. Wednesdays 15.30-17.00 on campus.
  • Hang Out and Write sessions. Open to all students working on written projects who want to get writing but have academic support in the room from one of our AUB Librarians and our EAP lecturer. A dedicated writing space with a supportive atmosphere, access to advice from an AUB Librarian and EAP lecturer, helping students feel motivated by working alongside other students and focussed on achieving their goals.

One-to-one/small group tutorials:

Please note that the Study Skills and EAP teams work together to support students in one-to-one or small group tutorials. If you speak English as an additional language, you may wish to choose Emma (our English for Academic Purposes lecturer) when you book.

If you'd like to discuss booking a tutorial, please call Student Advice at 01202 363780 or email at studentservices@aub.ac.uk
