Become an AUB Ambassador

Student Ambassadors

Represent AUB as a Student Ambassador

Student Ambassadors play a key role in the University. Not only will you help us create a great first impression of Arts University Bournemouth by sharing your experiences as a student, but by doing so, you bring the AUB campus to life and help to mentor and encourage others into Higher Education. It’s also the perfect way to share your creative passions with others!

By becoming an AUB Student Ambassador, you'll be part of an enthusiastic team, learn skills that add real value to your CV, and be able to take on paid work around your academic studies.

Why become a Student Ambassador?

Becoming a Student Ambassador offers you the opportunity to gain practical and useful experience in a number of ways, learning a variety of new skills such as:

  • Public speaking
  • Teamwork
  • Customer service
  • How to behave in a working environment
  • Networking with industry professionals at certain events
  • Travelling to different venues and adapting to different work environments

You'll also get to share your passion – you can inspire the next generation by sharing your own experiences, helping them to make informed choices about their future and becoming a positive role model for others.

These are all skills that are designed to help enhance your job prospects alongside your degree. We know that employers are increasingly looking to employ graduates who can demonstrate a ‘whole student experience’ and adding becoming an ambassador to your CV will help you stand out from the crowd.

The role of an AUB Student Ambassador

Students on Foundation, BA (Hons) and MA programmes can apply to become Student Ambassadors (subject to availability on your course).

Becoming a Student Ambassador means you're an ambassador for the University, representing our values and course offerings and sharing your life experiences as an AUB student. You’ll also have the opportunity to represent your course and share with others an insight into your studies.

During your time as an ambassador, you'll get to meet and work alongside various different groups, including prospective students, parents, teachers and careers advisors, as well as other ambassadors.

Your role as an ambassador is an important one. You provide something which a member of staff can’t: experience of life at AUB as a student.

As a Student Ambassador, you have the ability to share your passion for the creative arts and inspire others to pursue their dreams in the creative sector. You'll get chance to participate in a variety of work, from helping host events on campus and in schools, through to supporting with different admin tasks - there's something for everyone, and best of all, you can fit it all around your current studies.

What we're looking for

We're looking for students that can show, and want to develop, these key skills:

  • Reliability
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to work independently
  • Effective communication
  • Excellent organisation
  • Passion
  • Friendliness
  • Enthusiasm
  • Positivity
  • Problem-solving

In addition to the above, we need your individuality! We need you to share your experiences that are unique to you and provide that insight into life at AUB.

Student Ambassador job opportunities

As a student ambassador at AUB, there's plenty for you to get involved with. The work is varied, and this allows you to develop different skills throughout your time on the programme.

Here are just a few examples of work you could participate in:

Open Days are important events in our calendar and take place throughout the year. You'll have the opportunity to work in various roles, including meet-and-greet, tour guides, registration assistant and zone ambassadors. You're there to enhance the visitor experience, providing valuable insight from the eyes of a student.

Throughout the year, we’ll conduct Campus Tour training sessions. These will be delivered by experienced ambassadors and will help you to understand a few key points:

  • The purpose and main objectives of a campus tour
  • The best route around campus
  • Campus familiarisation
  • What to do in the event of a fire alarm/injury on campus
  • How to prepare to ensure the route is accessible for all visitors

Additional training opportunities may also be advertised throughout the year.

Work closely alongside prospective students at AUB for your course of study. Help your course team to host a workshop or presentation, take students on tours of your studios or simply for a coffee and have a chat, sharing your insight into your course. These days really allow potential students to experience what it's like to be an AUB student and you'll play a key part in that.

Taking place across the South of England but also further afield, you may have the opportunity to attend higher education and UCAS Fairs both in schools and at external event venues. These events are designed to provide prospective students with the opportunity to speak to various institutions about their course of interest and what the university has to offer.

Throughout the year, schools may bring small groups of students to the AUB campus to participate in workshops. These often take place in TheGallery but also CRAB Studio and Passiv Haus Life Drawing Studio. There may also be times when we're invited into schools to host workshops in their classrooms. In both instances, your role as an ambassador will be to support the workshop tutor with running the session, setting up, supervising the students taking part, and helping with the feedback session. You'll always be supervised by a member of staff.

TheGallery holds various events and workshops throughout the year. There are a number of different roles you may be required to assist with, including greeting guests, serving drinks to VIPs and running tours of campus.

Taking place once per year, usually in June, Graduation is the formal celebration event for that year’s graduating students. Your role will be to help support the event, which will often include visitor management. Working in small teams over the graduation site, overseen by an AUB member of staff, your role will be to help visitors find various points of interest, such as gowning, photography and the reception venue.

Application process

We recruit Student Ambassadors once per year in the autumn. We have a limited number of SAs that we can employ per course, and we'll review the current number employed at that time and, if your course has space available, it'll be included in the recruitment process.

  • End September/Early October – Applications will open. We’ll promote the recruitment process during Freshers and if your course is recruiting you’ll receive an email directly to your student account inviting you to apply. You’ll receive a link to apply online which consists of some basic information and a few questions so we can get to know you better! Please note: applications open to Foundation, L4 and L5 only, L6 and MA students aren't eligible to apply.
  • Mid October – Applications close.
  • End October – Shortlisting complete and those successfully shortlisted are invited to attend a group interview at the end of October/early November.
  • Early November – Those students that were successful at interview will be informed they have been appointed as Student Ambassadors and will await their paperwork from HR.
  • End November – Induction session – please note that attendance is compulsory.
  • Start date for first job – We aim to have the new intake of Student Ambassadors ready to work for the December Open Day.

If applying to become a Student Ambassador, you’ll firstly complete the online application and if you are successfully shortlisted you are invited to attend a group interview.

This interview will last approximately 30 minutes. The group size is a maximum of 16 and students will be split into smaller group sizes of 3-5 to conduct two tasks.

As part of becoming Student Ambassadors for AUB, there'll be several training opportunities available to you. Some will be mandatory and required as part of accepting the role. Others will be optional based on your personal interests.

HR will email you onboarding documents to complete, sign and return and they'll need to complete a Right to Work in the UK check. Once finalised, you'll receive a contract with further details of your employment.

It’s important you complete the onboarding documents sent to you in a timely manner.

Yes, many of our ambassadors also choose to have a weekend or evening job to support themselves financially. However, these jobs should support your studies and not interfere with your attendance at university or your ability to complete your course to the best of your ability.

All jobs are emailed to the student ambassador database. You can then choose to apply if the job suits your timetable and you wish to work. Please note this doesn't guarantee you the job. All applicants are then reviewed and if successfully selected for the role, you'll receive a confirmation email with further details.

Please note, if you're confirmed for a job and can no longer commit to it, we require as much notice as possible in order to replace you. Please ensure you put any work you accept into your calendar to avoid double-booking yourself.

You get paid by the hour – for the latest hourly rate please look up the Student Ambassador Claim Form on the intranet. At the end of each job you need to complete the Student Ambassador Claim Form and hand into the person responsible for the job to sign off. This form then gets submitted to Finance. Pay forms must be submitted by the 2nd of each month for payment at the end of the month.
