Combining my passions for costume, music and history has been central to my degree in BA (Hons) Costume.
This culminated in my two latest projects: an 1830s costume I wore for performances of Anne Lister’s music at Shibden Hall, Halifax, and a three-piece suit commissioned by Poole Museum, based on a portrait of Benjamin Lester (c. 1780). Through these briefs, I’ve found a fascination in making the past more accessible; in particular, how costume can make history tangible for today’s generation. These projects also gave me valuable experience of working on professional, live briefs to a deadline, enabling me to develop my collaborative skills and confidence.
Key to my artistic progression has been collaborating with The Square Pianist on commissions for museums and events across England. Rooted in historical re-enactment, these opportunities have allowed me to combine my AUB Music Scholarship training as a Classical Soprano (ATCL) with the creation of historically-accurate costumes in an educational performance context. This is something I’m looking forward to continuing after my degree – updates on latest events can be found on my social media and website.
For more, read my AUB Student Stories post about my practice, and this news article about how I combine costume and music.
Plans after degree
Moving forwards, I’m also planning to study a Master's in Historical Costume to refine my work as a creative.
