Ziyun (Joye) Chu – "I was looking for a course that would offer practical learning opportunities"

As an international student, my experience studying MA Film Practice at AUB has been extraordinary.

The main reason I chose AUB was after seeing the short films created by previous graduates. They were outstanding, showcasing a wide variety of genres and high-quality production. Upon further research, I discovered that AUB provides studio-level equipment, editing rooms, and film sets, which I was eager to use. Another important factor was AUB’s location. I really love the charming small-town atmosphere of Bournemouth, with its coastal setting and warm climate, and it’s also conveniently close to London.

I chose MA Film Practice specifically because of the name of the programme. I was looking for a course that would offer practical learning opportunities – I wanted to acquire hands-on knowledge rather than purely theoretical content.

While my primary interest lies in the creative and planning aspects of directing, I have also developed essential practical skills throughout the course, such as basic sound recording and cinematography techniques. These have been incredibly helpful for my work. We have both individual assignments and group projects, which have greatly enhanced my communication and collaboration skills – vital abilities in the film industry.

AUB also offers a wide range of activities, including festive markets, workshop cafés, and lectures, as well as various trips. I participated in the London and Oxford trips, both of which were unforgettable and exciting. Later this month, I’ll be going on a trip to Italy, organised by the University, which I am really looking forward to.

One of my favourite assignments was the "Just Practice" short film. I found this concept extremely engaging. The creative freedom and lack of constraints in the "Just Practice" series really sparked my creativity and passion. Without the pressure of rigid guidelines, the process of creation became truly enjoyable.

The most challenging project I worked on was a recent studio shoot. We were tasked with creating a two-minute scene with only two walls as the set. I didn’t do as well as I hoped, but I gained valuable insights and realised that I am not yet comfortable working with limited resources.

Additionally, every presentation brings its own stress – I'm not particularly fond of making PowerPoint presentations, and my language skills were not strong at first. However, after going through countless presentations, I feel much more confident and prepared now.

I’ve made many new friends here, and my spoken English has greatly improved.
