Dance Welcome Guide - Overview
Your Welcome Guide

We're delighted to have you join us at Arts University Bournemouth, and hope that your time here will be rewarding, challenging, creative and enjoyable.

Welcome to the BA (Hons) Dance course

This welcome pack is designed to give you an idea of what to expect during the first weeks of your course. Please take the time to read it carefully and take particular note of the pre-course preparation. We hope that you will enjoy a happy and productive time with us, and we look forward to meeting you in October.

A message from your Course Leader

I'm very excited that you are joining the BA (Hons) Dance degree this year. My colleagues and I are really looking forward to welcoming you to join us as a dance student at AUB. We hope you'll enjoy your course and embrace your time with us at Arts University Bournemouth.

Please read this pack carefully as it includes important information about your first week and certain course requirements. You'll find out more about the course and University on arrival, but in the meantime, you may wish to do some preparation. Hopefully, this pack will help you know what to expect.

As you'll already be aware, the BA (Hons) Dance course is a practice-based degree course that also contains some purely theoretical units. You will receive a course handbook and timetable in your first week.

See you soon. Looking forward to meeting you all.

- Jane White, Course Leader

Before you join us

There's no required summer reading for this course, nor are you expected to purchase any books. Once you arrive at AUB, you'll receive your Course Handbook which will contain a comprehensive reading list. The Library here at AUB is extremely well resourced and includes all key texts that you will need. However, over time you may decide to purchase a personal copy of frequently used texts.

There is no summer project set for the course.

If you read one thing before you arrive, we recommend...

Current student work

Have a look through some of the work our current students are producing to get an idea of the type of work you may be making on our course.

What to bring

You don't need to bring anything other than a pen, paper and your smile on your first day, but it would be good to invest in some:

  • Notepad and pens
  • Memory stick to back up work
  • Knee pads for floor work
  • Dance wear that is comfortable and non-restrictive
  • Assessment clothing
  • Fitted black tights/leggings/vest/leotard

As part of your course, you'll frequently be required to record your progress and practical development. Mobile phones with adequate storage are fine for this purpose.

AUB Students are encouraged to bring their own Laptop and Mobile device to AUB to support Online Learning, Collaboration and Communication whilst at University.

AUB provides access to a range of free software and discounts on Apple and Dell hardware. We recommend that you wait until you have set up your AUB IT account to access this free software and discounted hardware if you are planning on investing in a new computer.

Even if your course does not specifically use Adobe Creative Cloud we would recommend that you try to make sure your computer is able to run this software.

We recommend that you format any external hard-drives/USB sticks to work on both Apple and Windows.

Please note, this course uses both Apple and Windows computers.

The nature of the course means that you may need to use your computer on and off-campus. We, therefore, recommend that a portable laptop would be better than a desktop.
