My recent documentary photography project, centred on the decline of the high street, is a visual exploration of the fading vibrancy in our local communities. Through my lens, I sought to capture the stark contrasts between what once were bustling hubs of activity and their current state of desolation. This work is not just a chronicle of change but a call to action.
The high street has historically been the heart of our communities, where people not only shopped but also connected and shared experiences. However, the rapid rise of online shopping, coupled with economic challenges, has led to a noticeable decline. My photographs depict shuttered shops, empty storefronts, and the fading remnants of once-thriving businesses, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable solutions.
This project aims to raise awareness about the importance of preserving these spaces, advocating for the support of local, sustainable businesses that can revitalise our high streets. I hope my work encourages viewers to reflect on their own relationship with these communal spaces and to take action in promoting and supporting the businesses that keep our high streets alive. The future of our communities depends on it.
