During my three years at university, I have learnt so much. I joined in the first year with a few self-taught sewing skills and I am now leaving my third year able to construct a professional-level historical costume.
Although I enjoy all elements of sewing, corsetry is one of my favourites. I am passionate about the history of corsets and how the shape has changed throughout history. The sewing and construction of the corset fascinates me – this is why I chose to do a personal project in my last year at university. I adapted the pattern of a corset to look like the front of Jack Skellington’s iconic striped suit, accompanied by a pair of men’s tailored trousers. I also adapted a corset to look like Edward Scissorhands' iconic leather strapped clothing, as well as some leather studded accessories.
For my final major project, I had the opportunity to make one of the costumes for AUB’s historical production of La Casa Nova. I made an 18th century three-piece suit for the character ‘Toni’.
Plans after degree
After I graduate, I will continue to develop my skills in the theatre or film industry and pursue my love for all things corsetry.
