Over the course of my degree, I have become proficient in costume construction. My knowledge has predominantly expanded regarding historical and theatrical interpretation, though I would also love to explore film.
During my third year, I completed two very different projects. My first project was a live brief in collaboration with Salisbury Museum to create a 16th century children’s dress-up costume for their new exhibition. Specifically, I created the costume by interpreting a portrait of a historically significant local figure, Joan Popley. This not only introduced me to children's wear but also challenged my research skills to extrapolate costume elements the portrait didn’t show.
For my final project, I created Cinderella’s walk-down dress for a pantomime. This juxtaposed my first project as everything was shifted to a larger scale. For this costume, I revisited old processes to produce a petticoat and underskirt, however I also learnt various new processes to create a pannier and a sack back gown. I thoroughly enjoyed this project and the heavy decoration required to bring the costume and character to life.
Plans after degree
I plan to look for experience in the industry to refine and develop my making skills further.
