My interest has always been with surface decoration and during my studies at AUB, I have been able to developed my techniques in this throughout my three years. I am continually excited by new techniques, historical sewing methods and in particular the use of recycled materials.
During my final major project while working on A Midsummer Night's Dream, I was able to further establish these skills while include the element of sustainability which is something I am very passionate about within my own making. My focus became reusing plastic bottles, scrap fabric and sea glass, which was used to make flowers, leaves and a necklace. I love the idea of making something beautiful from ‘rubbish’.
I have also developed a love for tailoring and I was able to expand on my skills while working on my personal project. I created a replica 1830s yeomanry uniform jacket for Salisbury’s permanent collection. This included working with gold braid, quilting and furthering my knowledge of historical tailoring and construction methods to keep the costume historically accurate.
Plans after degree
I hope to continue learning new techniques and developing my skills while working sustainably. I would love to combine tailoring and surface decoration to start my own business.
