These make-up looks were created for use in the short psychological horror film Liminal, written and directed by me and Emily Ferguson. The film follows art history student Maeve Campbell, played by Alma Boldrick, who after a beach day with her friends starts seeing disturbing hallucinations of herself. Presumed to be suffering from Cotard's Syndrome, she descends into madness as her hallucinations and delusions become all too real.
At the end of the film, it is revealed that Maeve drowned during her day at the beach and the hallucinations are her way of coming to terms with her death before she can move on to the afterlife.
Throughout the film, there are signs that what Maeve is seeing is because she has drowned. Each make-up look was designed to look like the early decomposition changes in bodies recovered from water including skin sloughing, discolouration, bloating, and skin abrasions.
