Aurora of Agony
Aurora of Agony is a wall-mounted sculptural composition comprised of a round, circular and central reflective acrylic with a menagerie of colours, shapes and patterns formed largely towards the edges. The colours and patterns resemble that of a stylised kaleidoscope with the geometric, pointed, and angular configuration contrasting the rounded swirl markings on the surface of the reflective material.
Aurora of Agony explores viewing situations with the lens of ill physical health and the artist's own perspective of lived experience with chronic illness, a rare form of migraine condition called familial hemiplegic migraines. It is an encapsulation of the experience of the visual and sensory disturbances when having a migraine called an 'aura'. Due to this, many design choices about the piece are purely commanded by what is seen during the artist's state of dissociation.
The piece aims to allure the viewer with the intriguing beauty of the crystallised forms and colours, beginning to suggest a somewhat psychedelic and hallucinogenic reality. It conveys an essence of beauty that serves as a stark contrast to the negative impact that the migraine experience leaves behind on the body and the psyche.
