My three years on the BA (Hons) Costume course, has allowed me to improve my technical sewing abilities, my approach to creative experimentation and my historical research skills.
I have worked as part of a bigger team on theatre productions, working to several deadlines throughout the project for everything to be fitted and ready for the first tech rehearsals.
I also had the opportunity to explore historical techniques and practices in debt during one of my third-year projects where I worked to reconstruct an 18th century cloak by hand using grosgrain silk which I dyed using indigo and decorated with a bobbin lace trim I made following Janet Arnold's illustration of the trim from the original cloak in Patterns of Fashion 6. A project which I entered in the Costume Society’s Patterns of Fashion competition.
These experiences have confirmed my knowledge that I enjoy the time and research which goes into the making of historical costumes, it has given me a greater appreciation of the effort and intention that went into the construction of garments historically. Because of this I hope to continue working with historical costumes in the future.
