Essence

Omofaderera Wahab is a mixed media artist that was born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria and is currently based in England. The core aspects of her works are intertwined with themes that can be linked to nostalgia, storytelling and visual illustrations of the intangible human essence, occasionally with reference to her own communion with God.

Her final year artwork, Essence, is a large-scale zine that combines various materials and fabrics collected over a period of time to form colourful pages that depict an image of the artist without directly drawing out her physical appearance. The work, which is mainly a textile piece, is almost like a visual diary that acts like an entryway for the viewer to see a representation of the artist, while still holding its own intimacy in the form of various metaphors dotted around each page, like the use of lettering to highlight personal jottings and poems, or the figure eating grapes on the last page to mean the sweetness of transitioning into a new chapter. The work was exhibited with the middle pages open to encourage the audience to flip through the piece and interact with it like a texturally diverse storybook.
