This project envisions a transformative community-owned centre in the east suburbs of Southampton, dedicated to fostering local resilience and empowerment.
Rooted in the principles of co-design, the project prioritises community involvement to ensure the design is dynamic and reflective of real, evolving needs. The aim is to address systemic issues by creating a hub that offers equal opportunities and resources, thus maximising benefits for the community, enhancing cohesion, and tackling pressing local challenges.
In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, the importance of local support systems has been starkly highlighted. The project addresses critical issues such as limited public space, social isolation, and food insecurity, particularly affecting single-parent families and lonely young people. Through extensive community surveys, it has identified three key focus areas: food, public space, and social opportunities. By integrating systems of Community, Food, and Play, the design fosters public engagement through workshops, activities, initiatives, and events.
This participatory approach encourages collective action and mindset shifts, empowering residents to actively participate in transforming their environment and addressing systemic barriers. The centre aims to be a beacon of hope and a model for sustainable, community-driven development.
