BA (Hons) Costume

Emiliya Kezhina

My final year on the BA (Hons) Costume course gave me an opportunity to complete two different projects. At the beginning of my third year, I constructed and made costumes for contemporary dance show.

For my major project, I worked on 18th century menswear, especially in the early time around 1735–50. At that time, men's fashion had an extravagant look. I made a 1750s men’s jacket with pleats and green glass pearls, and a golden-embellished shirt with frills and a cravat, breeches, and waistcoat.

This project was for AUB Productions' La Casa Nova, which played at the Palace Court Theatre in Bournemouth. This inspired me to start making more tailored garments. I am glad that my tutors put me on the project, otherwise I would have never made this choice. I am so happy with how my costume turned out, and I can give a life to my own designs.

Plans after degree

I am confident enough to take a further step to get into the theatre and film industries – and why not opera? I would possibly like to build my own business as well.
