Biomimicry and Cryptic Colouring
My final graduate project, entitled Biomimicry and Cryptic Colouring, explores the concept of natural defence mechanisms such as cryptic colouring, phenotypic plasticity, camouflage and mimicry, which are evolved traits that aid in the preservation of species, whether predator or prey.
I have been particularly inspired by natural patterns, warning signals, vibrant colours, and surface textures which are present in both flora and fauna, and have depicted my interests through my drawings, material choices, and techniques such as CAD embroidery, hand embroidery and digital print used within my final spring/summer fashion collection. To support my practical work, I have researched designers such as Iris van Herpen, Amandine Bouet and Roberto Cavalli in order to gather a diverse range of inspiration and inform an eclectic approach, which has been an ongoing feature of my work throughout my degree. This project has recently been exhibited at New Designers in Islington for the Textiles Graduate category.
Plans after degree
Following on from achieving a 2:1 in my BA, I have now been offered an unconditional place on the MA Illustration at AUB (beginning in September) and awarded with a progression scholarship.
Alongside my postgraduate studies, I intend to relaunch my own sustainable fashion brand, which I previously established during lockdown: creating unconventional garments from up-cycled materials and scrap fabrics.
