Carys Tupper
Carys Tupper’s practice explores the ephemeral materiality of the body, using the body as apparatus to translate experience into visual language. The body as a site and vessel is integral to her work.
Her work sits of the axis of painting, sculpture and performance culminating into the creation of a hybrid entity, challenging perceived boundaries of genres. Tupper's work is often characterised by its relationship to action painting, abstract expressionism, and punk aesthetic.
Rupture at the ephemeral seam (still life) conceptually explores the ephemerality of the body. It addresses attachment to material reality and the passing of time, encouraging questioning of what lies beyond. The canvas is metaphorical for flesh and records translation of the corporeal experience through gesture. The scale is human height, however; its suspension alludes to a butcher’s carcass, reducing the human body to material of flesh.
Claiming objects is a way to ground oneself through narrative; a collectible (like a souvenir) tethers through time and space. The collection of flowers relate to celebration, death, and the cyclical, referencing vanitas and memento mori. The juxtaposition of natural decay and meticulous arrangement invites reflection on the tension between the body’s ephemerality and the human desire to preserve and control.
Plans after degree
I’m excited to continue to build my practice and creative community and intend to pursue a Master’s in Fine Art within the next three years.
