Please note, it’s not possible to enrol on this course part-way through. You’ll need to attend from the start date in February

You’ll be expected to complete projects, exercises, and research outside of your sessions at AUB. You’ll be provided with more details about timelines and project submission deadlines at the start of the course.

Suitable for adults aged 18+.

Level

Beginners or anyone with some experience who want to refresh or develop their skills further.

Experience or qualifications required

None – this is an introductory course. We have no formal academic entry requirements for our short courses. However, it will be beneficial if you’ve already completed one of our short courses or possess some art experience.

Deposit

You can choose to secure your place with a deposit of £400 and pay the remainder of your fees in one further instalment of £439. Simply, choose this option when booking your place online. The total balance of your course fee is payable by 1 October 2024. See our T&Cs (below) for further details.

Additional materials and resources will be provided by AUB and is included in your course fee. Your SEG registration fee is also covered by your fee.

About this course

This 20-week Skills Education Group (SEG) Level 1 accredited qualification will enable you to practice and hone your skills, boost your confidence, and develop your visual communication skills.

Having a Level 1 qualification will prepare you for further learning, give you the skills to progress in your current job, or equip you with new skills needed to change your career path.

This highly practical course will encourage you to explore and develop your design skills as a dynamic visual communicator. You’ll be expertly led by your tutor to investigate, explore, and delve into the world of visual communication, where you’ll develop core design skills working across a series of exciting projects.

As you advance your artistic design skills, specialist techniques, and creative flair, you’ll build a personal portfolio to showcase your newfound knowledge that reflects and showcases your visual voice.

Throughout the course you’ll undertake a series of projects using a range of different media. Through these projects you’ll have the chance to experiment with a variety of different artistic styles and creative techniques, which will include, creative design, visual identity, digital and print media, advertising, and branding.

At the end of the course you'll:

  • Be prepared and confident in taking the next step in your creative journey, including pursuing further academic studies
  • Possess improved artistic skills, including both essential and progressive techniques
  • Have a sound understanding of the importance of appropriate planning and preparation, including research methods
  • Be able to work to a set brief and develop suitable ideas and bodies of work in response
  • Possess an enhanced ability to visually communicate your ideas and develop your visual voice
  • Have increased confidence in your own skills and feel inspired
  • Have boosted creativity and imagination
  • Feel encouraged to learn new ways of working with industry standard software
  • Be able to tackle a brief and create interesting solutions 
  • Possess the foundations to continue creating beyond this course

Will I be assessed?

Yes, if you complete this 20-week programme and meet the necessary ongoing assessment criteria set by Skills Education Group (SEG) you’ll be awarded an accredited Level 1 Skills Education Group certificate.

The final assessment of work submitted for moderation will be graded by SEG as either pass or fail. Assessment can include practical tasks, assignments, presentations, and portfolio reviews. In the Saturday sessions you’ll meet individually with your tutor to discuss your progress.
