Please be aware, you’ll be expected to undertake some self-study and additional project work between course sessions to support your development throughout the course. Ensure you'll have time for this.

Suitable for adults aged 18+.

Level

Beginners or anyone with some experience who want to refresh or develop their skills further.

None – this is an introductory course. We have no formal academic entry requirements for our short courses.

About this course

This highly practical and intensive course is designed to introduce you to the exciting world of professional make-up artistry and equip you with unique skills in special effects make-up applications.

It’s suitable if you’re a complete beginner when it comes to make-up artistry or if you’ve got some previous experience and are considering embarking on a career in professional make-up artistry.

The knowledge, skills, and training you’ll receive on this course will enable you to confidently take your first steps into entering the professional arena to pitch for work in a variety of professional make-up jobs, whether it be for weddings, photo-shoots, special occasions, glamour, video-blogs, theatre productions, and/or for film and TV purposes.

You’ll be introduced to the fundamental make-up processes, approaches, and essential skills to advance your knowledge quickly and confidently to create make-up looks and styles in a systematic fashion. You’ll undertake a series of exciting project assignments to advance your learning and gain experience working to a brief. Each week you’ll be introduced to various application techniques and styles using an assortment of make-up mediums and methods.

Everyone on the course will take equal share in applying make-up to each other, and by doing so you’ll gain an appreciation of how your future clients and customers will experience your services. Plus, this also means you’ll have the opportunity to practice your skills on a variety of face shapes and skin complexions.

  • An introduction to the world of the professional make-up artist, including history, current practices, and how make-up impacts and connects to the creative arts
  • Health and Safety considerations, hygiene, and best working practices
  • How make-up can be used in various art forms, looks, and styles
  • Identifying facial shapes, bone structure and skin, types
  • The principles behind building a context to your work and forward planning
  • Mediums, methods, and specialist application techniques
  • Alternative processes and special effects make-up applications
  • Different mediums and application methods
  • Mini assignments and collaborating on ideas
  • Client consultation techniques and costing services as a make-up artist

At the end of the course you'll:

  • Understand the fundamental concepts of professional make-up industry, and what opportunities you may have working as a freelance make-up artist
  • Have had the chance to practice with different make-up mediums, application methods, and techniques
  • Be able to apply practical techniques for integrating special effects into your final look
  • Have enhanced personal artistic expression
  • Be able to work to a brief
  • Have insight into ethical considerations and responsible use of materials
  • Be able to collaborate with peers to create and share experiences and feedback
  • Have increased confidence in your own skills and feel inspired
  • Have boosted creativity and imagination
  • Possess the foundations to continue creating beyond this course

No, there is no formal assessment. As the course progresses your tutor will measure your overall performance and offer essential guidance and feedback, so you know how you're getting on.
