University Music is a collaborative department that exists to provide musical opportunities for all students at AUB and BU.

Whether you are an experienced musician or a beginner we have something to offer you.

We currently have 3 choirs in a variety of styles, 2 orchestras a big band and various other more informal groups which all meet weekly. Practice rooms, with pianos, are available to use free of charge in the music department, which is based on the first floor of Talbot House and lessons are available on all instruments and voice.

We also promote a full programme of professional and student performances on and off the campus.

Further details are available at or by emailing

If you are an experienced musician then you may be eligible for a music scholarship which funds the cost of weekly lessons with one of our tutors in addition to the cost of any exam entries, accompaniment sessions and other related expenses. To be considered for an award you will need to have;

  • Passed grade 8 (ABRSM or Trinity) preferably with a merit or distinction.
  • Passed either A level music (grade A-C) or ABRSM / Trinity grade 8 theory.
  • Have a strong track record of involvement in musical ensembles.

Scholars are expected to make a meaningful contribution to the life of University Music by taking regular lessons and committing to at least one ensemble. Many scholars achieve graduate-level diplomas from Trinity College of Music, London during their time with us and thus are able to maintain their musical studies alongside their main programme. For further details, please email Ian Davis (Head of University Music)
