Dayanny So

Dayanny's artistic practice is deeply rooted in his upbringing in Cambodia and the unexpected journey that brought him to the UK as a young adult. He draws inspiration from a rich tapestry of experiences, memories, and cultural influences, including the complexities of displacement that are often overlooked in understanding the post-genocide experience.

Exploring the dynamic relationship between Eastern and Western popular cultures and fine art is a central theme of his work. He delves into subjects that hold significant meaning for his birthplace.

Music, classical Khmer sculptures, artisan handcrafts, cultural identity, and textiles are used to address the social and political issues of its turbulent past, entwined with his personal struggles as an immigrant in the layering of familiar visual and narrative elements within conceptual installations.

The traditional and tactile craftsmanship evident in his work holds profound meaning for him. As a child, he spent countless hours making toys and objects for himself, influencing his artistic process.

Each project may involve diverse media, but his practice-based research methodology remains consistent. The choice of raw materials is guided by the subject matter, creating a thread of connection between different objects at the intersections of cultures and identities.

Plans after degree

Dayanny is looking for opportunities to exhibit his work and gain visibility, including applying for artist residencies, like Spud Launchpad to develop his practice in new environments and collaborate with other artists.

He wants to build connections within the art community through workshops, seminars, and social media platforms. Dayanny wants to continue to refine and expand his portfolio, focusing on his unique artistic voice and themes, including research and applications for grants and funding opportunities to support his artistic project.
