Alexis Elyzia Henry

I am an aspiring dance artist. I have been dancing since I was three years-old and always knew that this was what I was going to pursue.

I am passionate about the power of dance and am drawn to creating evocative work that sparks an emotional response in audiences. From choreography and creative exploration to the technical side of sound editing and lighting design, I have found a strong passion for all the work that goes into creating a dance production. I adore idealising a vision and working innovatively to help a dance piece come to life.

For my final project, I underwent an R&D process to develop an exhibition of work entitled Things Left Unsaid, depicting themes of grief, loss and unspoken love. The driving force behind this theme is the notion that we rarely talk about the love we want to express but can’t; not because we're not brave enough to say it out loud, but because they, the listener, are not here to listen anymore. As part of this, I curated an exhibition of artefacts, a dance film of a self-created and self-performed solo titled ...Love Still Is and a piece of evocative group choreography made in collaboration with my dancers.

This is a body of work that I am really proud of and that I am looking to expand on and pursue further in the future. I am interested in deepening my research on dance for grief and creating a safe space of expression for myself and others surrounding the universal, yet also personal, topic of loss.

Plans after degree

Post-graduation, I am open to all avenues of creating a dance career and hope to build up an eclectic portfolio of exciting dance work in a range of forms and outputs.

I want to continue working on unlocking my personal style. Something I love about dance and the industry is the aspect of continually learning – I want to immerse myself within the dance community, learning from those around me. In the future, I am looking to curate my own contemporary dance company as I have a strong interest in choreography and creation. I have embarked on an immense journey over the course of my time studying at AUB, especially surrounding confidence and self-worth. I am really interested in the coexistence of self-identity and that of being a dancer.

From personal experience, my dissertation research into perfectionism in dance and the impact of dance training on personal development, I really recognise the importance of creating safe spaces and facilitating environments. I hope this is something I can contribute to in the industry and draw upon when creating a company.
