The 2017 Creative Conscience Awards were announced on 5 July at an awards ceremony hosted by IBM in London.
Creative Conscience is a not-for-profit organisation that aims to improve the communities in which we live and work and in turn help transform the wider world. The intention is to achieve this through the promotion of socially valuable, human-centred design that will enable and inspire people to change their lives and the lives of those around them for the better.
We caught up with Graphic Design tutor, Alice Stevens to see what she attributed to the overwhelming success and variety of categories in which students from Graphic Design had achieved. Alice suggests that:
“Within our course philosophy we have an emphasis on problem-finding, not just problem-solving. I think the reason the projects within the course cover such a range of creative disciplines is because we do not necessarily set the outcome at the beginning of the project. We do have a culture of high expectation and students are encouraged to explore and find issues meaningful to them, take time to empathise with their users and then to seek to solve those problems through design”. It is both inspiring and rewarding to mentor these students but it can also be humbling when you realise the personal obstacles that some have had to overcome.”
